Advanced Java - Enterprise Application

This course will consist of four hands-on laboratory exercises that will allow participants to experience the process of building distributed applications using the Java programming environment. In particular, we will explore the use of RMI and CORBA, two cutting-edge implementations of the remote procedure call paradigm as well as the JDBC interface to SQL databases.

It is expected that all participants have a working knowledge of core Java concepts, HTML and at least some experience with SQL programming and a RDBMS (such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, PostgreSQL or MySQL). It is assumed that any person who wishes to enroll has used a RAD tool such as Visual J++, Visual Cafe, Netbeans Developer or Forte for Java. The textbook for the course is:

Using Java 2 Platform Special Edition
Joseph Weber
INS 0-7897-2018-3

The textbook is required and must be purchased before the first class. No participant may attend this class without a working knowledge of chapters 1-24, 27-33, 35, 47 and 49-50. A 3-credit course at a university or the "Introduction to Java Programming" course are officially a prerequisite. This course will cover chapters 36-40 and 42. It is suggested that participants read those chapters before the first class.
