BNAI ZION SCIENTISTS DIVISION and
COOPER UNION SCHOOL OF
ENGINEERING
JOB ORIENTATION & TERMINOLOGY CLASSES
The National Electrical Code - Course I:
The National Electrical Code
(NEC)
and its general applications.
The course will be taught
from the perspective of a consulting/specifying engineer; however the material
covered will benefit individuals involved in a wide range of fields; from the
technician or electrician doing installations and/or maintenance to the engineer
designing AC powered equipment.
This course will concentrate on the general
applications of the code contained in the first four chapters.
Such general applications include:
- General (definitions and requirements for electrical
installations), Wiring and Protection (use and identification of grounded
conductors, branch circuits, feeders, services, over current protection,
grounding and bonding, etc.),
- Wiring Methods and Materials ( wiring methods,
conductors for general wiring, cabinets and enclosures, outlet and junction
boxes, and various cable and conduit types),
- Equipment for General Use (flexible cords and cables, fixture wires, switches, receptacles, panelboards, industrial
control panels, luminaries, appliances , fixed electric heat, motors, motor
circuits and controllers, air conditioning and refrigeration, generators,
transformers, etc.)
.
Along the way, we will work through numerous calculations
to determine feeder sizes, voltage drops, conduit fill, etc. and learn how to
utilize the many tables contained within the code. Exercises involving building
plans will be used to help the student apply his knowledge to actual real world
conditions. While the course is not an exam-prep per se, one wishing to pursue a
master’s electrician’s license or a professional engineer’s license, should be
better prepared upon completion of the course.
The required book is the latest edition of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code
Manual available online @ http://www.nfpa.org/catalog/. Our students will
receive this book for FREE.
